Sir Billiam's Sounds of Summer

I hope everyone enjoyed his or her Memorial Day weekend.  For those of you who went to the beach (not the shore), I am sure that the long drive to the place where water meets land was well worth it.  The first Dewey/OC excursion with friends is quite possibly the most fun time of the year.  Although as mentioned before, the car ride is long and boring.  Unless you are an experienced vet and take back roads to avoid traffic and fly right in.  Not saying we did that.  Just implying it.

However, the 3 hours that we were in the car with the top down, in the convertible, gave us time to listen to XM radio, with the smell of the beach drawing ever so close and the prospect of great times ahead.  We knew we were about to discover what will be the anthems of summer 2011.  I would first like to thank XM radio for playing a plethora of songs, on many different channels.  Without you this would not be possible.

Dance/Pop

This first band has given us multiple hits to dance sloppily, scream out ridiculous lyrics, and pump our fists into oblivion.  LMFAO has taken an extremely catchy beat, mixed it with some well timed beat drops, and vague references that all can relate to. So coming in at #1 on the summer hit list is “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO.  Thank you for the genius.

Pop

I must say I was hesitant when this second song came on the radio.  I have spent a long time trying to avoid listening to this artist because I found her music to be a show.  But once Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” came on, I was scaring children in the car behind us (don’t forget we were in a convertible) with my air band-ing.  So thank you Gaga for some excellent summer time music.

Rock

If you are driving to the beach, if you are anything like me, you have to blast some music and get your air drum on while the driver plays the air guitar (Caution: this takes a lot of practice driving with your knees and controlling a car while uncontrollably air drumming.)  Rise Against has put out a new CD recently and their new single "Help is On the Way" is an excellent rock out song while driving to the beach.

I also want to put "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons.  I know this song is getting ridiculously over played, however it is quite fun to play the Air Banjo, as well as sing the lyrics with his ridiculously heavy accent.  If you are looking for a good new Mumford and Sons song, try "White Blank Page".  Dig it.

I am sure as all you head to the beach this summer, or the bay or wherever you like to cause destruction and get an awful sunburn, you will find some songs that define your summer.  I have a feeling that these are going to be some heavy hitters.

Have some good times, drink a few cold ones, and let the music be your soundtrack to an excellent 2011 summer season!

Sir Billiam… OUT!
